BrewDog Punk AF

"Juicy tropical fruit mixes it up with grassy and pine notes. All sitting on a solid malt bassline" (Brewdog)

drinkNAB Review

It's very drinkable

Punk AF feels like a toned down version of Nanny State, and thus I personally prefer it. There is a mild fruitiness, along with the hops, and it's drinkable. I didn't find it hugely satisfying at first but it did grow on me. No doubt, many may well love this and it helps a great deal that it's easily available. Hats off to BrewDog for bringing a trio of NABs to the market and hopefully we'll see some more in the future.

Update: I'm not sure why, but this has grown on me so much that I'm going to increase my rating from 3.5 to 4.5. I bought a 12 pack of bottles and drinking one from the bottle at a cool but not fridge temperature really hit the spot. Maybe I've been drinking it too cold previously. Apologies, BrewDog, you have converted me.

Light and fruity IPA

This is a VERY light IPA with a distinct grapefruit tone. Looks like a pilsner in the glass, but the grapefruit aroma hits you right away. There's not much backbone or bitterness, but the citrus and light hops provide enough flavor. Think of it as a summer/session IPA. I didn't love it, but would buy it again. Would be a 4 but it poured a bit flat. No head to speak of.

Enjoyable.

I like this, quite dry. A good bitter experience.

Just Punk Enough

I have to admit I opened this bottle with some trepidation. I'm a long-standing fan of BrewDog's Punk IPA, and IPAs in general and really didn't want to be disappointed!

First off, let's talk about branding, and labels. I'm a designer by trade, and I have to say I absolutely love BrewDog's branding and graphic style - their beers definitely stand out on the shelf. With 'Alcohol Free IPA' emblazoned up the side of the bottle (or can), you can't say that they're trying to hide the fact that this beer is 0.5% ABV. At the same time, it looks like a solid member of the BrewDog family - perfectly at home next to its alcoholic brothers and sisters.

Having opened the bottle I enjoyed the aroma - at this point it was absolutely not obvious this is a low alcohol alternative. Honestly, if someone had passed me the bottle without me seeing the label, by smell alone I'd have known it was a BrewDog IPA. I chose to pour mine into a glass - normally I'd be happy to drink from the bottle, but I wanted to see what the colour was like, and the head.

In the glass Punk AF has a great colour, light and bright, with a decent amount of fizz. I poured quite quickly and a healthy-looking head appeared. And then disappeared. I'm not too bothered about whether my beer has a head or not, so this is of no concern to me - but I know others will take a different view!

And finally, to the taste. I had high hopes - and to a certain extent they were fulfilled. The usual citrus flavours are there with a good amount of bitterness and a perfectly acceptable aftertaste. I have to say, I enjoyed it.

In describing the taste to my wife, I said it was a bit like eating a diet version of something when you're used to the full-fat original - so given that I had nowhere to drive this evening I was slightly disappointed. But, as a low-alcohol alternative to a favourite beer, it is absolutely acceptable in my view and I'd definitely buy it again to drink at home or if out for the evening.
