Smoky and the Bodhran

I'm really rather excited about this. If you like smoky stouts, this is it right here. It took me back to the time when a 10 year old, I first tried Applewood Smoked Cheddar - I was blown away that so much flavour could be contained with a food. The head and aroma when poured are both excellent, a chocolatey colour coming through in the froth. The mouthfeel and taste starts off akin to a proper Irish stout that I had at a bar in Carrickfergus. (I was supposed to be sleeping in the hotel part of the building, but by 3am in became clear that the Irish liked their traditional music and stout so I gave up sleeping and joined in). There is a bit of wateriness hiding in the smoke, but I soon forgave it. What I quite liked, and others may not, was the feeling in the back of the throat afterwards that you get when you've been standing round a campfire. To my mind, drinks are supposed to elicit a response - and this one really really did bang the Bodhran.
